We talk a lot about the different advantages of utilizing private cloud computing and even hybrid cloud solutions for business. A recent announcement from Dell has many developers and business owners alike excited about the prospects of their new project that focuses on multi-cloud services. Partnering with VMware and NVIDIA, the company will be building three new services that they claim will improve efficiency in the way that companies “consume, manage, and act on critical data.” The primary goal is to enhance cross-cloud data management, make improvements to object storage and establish structural changes to AI configurations that will allow for better data analytics.
What are Multi-Cloud Services?
According to the folks at Dell, there is no getting around the idea of multi-cloud services. A large majority of organizations are already relying more on the use of multiple clouds and other cloud computing technologies to remain competitive in today’s business climate. They anticipate that more than 90 percent of businesses will be utilizing some mix of private cloud computing, hybrid cloud solutions, and public cloud services within the next year. At that high rate of adoption, it just makes sense that companies like Dell, VMware, and NVIDIA will get involved to develop services that address the most common issues associated with having data stored across multiple cloud servers and on-premises servers.
Some of the issues experienced by companies that are already utilizing this approach include figuring out how to manage the data itself and latency spikes that occur when processing the data. Other concerns include network security, employee training to prevent unauthorized access, and ongoing data management. The first new product to be launched by the Dell VMware partnership is called APEX Cloud Services. This Dell-managed Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) product promises to provide clients with “the best of both worlds” for public and private cloud computing. APEX falls into a category that is known as on-premises cloud IaaS products, which are maintained and operated by the customer but owned and managed by Dell.
APEX Cloud Services with VMware Cloud
Dell has stated that its new product will bring multi-cloud services and capabilities to the client’s VMware workloads in 14 days. The goal is to provide customers with predictable pricing and a variety of self-service options designed to improve innovation and use of private cloud computing and hybrid cloud solutions. Cloud-native applications can be built using APEX Cloud with VMware Tanzu, and workload migration between cloud providers can be improved when used with VMware HCX. Currently, in “private preview” status, it is anticipated that APEX Cloud Services will be available in the US by the end of January 2022.
Other Multi-Cloud Services from Dell
In addition to APEX, Dell has two other products up its sleeve that will be available very soon, as well. Dell EMC ObjectScale is designed to work with companies that utilize Amazon S3 Object Storage to lower development costs, drive application innovation, and help IT departments manage and scale workloads with the VMware tools that they are already familiar with using. It is expected to be released globally in Q4 2021 and can be used with the popular Dell EMC VxRail hardware for even more advanced applications and benefits.
The final multi-cloud services product to be released by Dell and VMware involves a partnership with NVIDIA. The companies have worked together to create Dell Technologies Validated Design for AI. This product was built to help companies run demanding AI workloads across multiple hybrid cloud solutions, once again using VMware management and automation tools. The program requires the client to also use NVIDIA’s AI Enterprise software suite on NVIDIA-certified systems. Dell describes this program as an “industry-first offering” of an AI-ready platform that can help businesses increase configuration and integration speeds of AI models to data by as much as 20 percent. This program is already available all around the world.
